Local area

Midhurst, West Sussex

Historic Midhurst, a town of attractive shops and narrow lanes, sits squarely on the Surrey and Sussex border. As well as over 100 listed buildings, including The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene and St Denys in the Old Market Square, Midhurst is also blessed with delightful hotels, glorious gastro-pubs and splendid restaurants.

There’s so much to see and do in this delightfully charming place. From walking, cycling and horse riding in the South Downs National Park, to golf, clay pigeon shooting and fly fishing in next door Cowdray Park, there are no shortage of invigorating, and quintessentially British outdoor pursuits in and around the town. Midhurst is also the home of English polo, and its seasonal highlight, the King Power Gold Cup final.

The Grange Centre offers more indoor activities and facilities to help people stay fit and active, including squash and badminton courts, drop-in exercise classes and a well-equipped gym, and is also home to a function room, café and the town’s library. When you need to decompress and relax, Cowdray Hall hosts Yoga, Pilates and meditation classes, and you could always try spot of wine tasting at Upperton Vineyard, or sample the hand-blended country wines and spirits at Lurgashall Winery.

There are also lots of ways to get involved with the local community, notably some fantastic charities, and a few arts, crafts and theatre groups. Every August the MADhurst Festival brings together musicians, artists and craftspeople for a celebration of creativity, and a procession through the high street, while green-fingered residents are invited to enter their gardens into the annual Midhurst in Bloom competition. Festivities continue throughout the year and in December, the town gets together for a Christmas street party.

In terms of places to visit that are close by, you’re spoilt for choice. A mere 12 miles from Midhurst, Chichester is a destination for sailors and theatre buffs, and for the racing enthusiasts, glorious Goodwood is only a short drive away. Stunningly beautiful Haslemere, 8 miles from our building, means fast trains to London are virtually on our doorstep too. Nearby Petworth is worth a visit, if only to see the Old Masters hanging in Petworth House, and Arundel’s medieval castle is definitely a must see.

Neighbouring Towns

The beautiful City of Chichester, shaped by its unique heritage, is made for exploring. Blending old and new, Chichester offers an enticing mix of designer label boutiques, high street shopping, renowned art galleries, and stylish restaurants and cafes. There are fantastic leisure facilities including the award-winning Chichester Festival Theatre, Pallant House Gallery, leisure clubs, day spas, parks and gardens. There’s also a wide range of eating establishments from fine dining restaurants to cosy inns, and cafes to coffee shops. For keen sailors, Chichester Harbour is close by, and The Solent and world-famous Cowes Week sailing Regatta on the Isle of Wight are all within easy reach.

Petworth’s historical centre is full to the brim with boutique stores (including a wealth of antique shops) as well as some great restaurants and cafés. The attractive old market town is probably best known for the National Trust-owned Petworth House, with its beautiful 750 acre parkland in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Home to an outstanding collection of Old Masters, glorious gardens and a Deer Park, the property also boasts first class deli and shops that cater for most everyday needs. As well as hosting a regular farmers market, there are frequent events and activities for adults and children alike. Other local happenings include the Petworth Festival in mid-summer, which offers a wealth of activities, and the Literary Festival in November, a must for book-lovers.

Nearby Arundel, with its impressive medieval castle and delightful riverside pubs makes for another fascinating day-trip. This historic town also offers a good variety of art galleries, restaurants, independent shops and country leisure pursuits…plenty of things to do for all ages.

Situated on the borders of Hampshire and West Sussex, this historic market town, with its timbered and tile hung houses and cottages, is one of the gems of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The many  recreational facilities, boutique shops, restaurants and cafés, not to mention a large Waitrose supermarket make Haslemere a destination for miles around, and the mainline station has regular fast trains that can reach London Waterloo in approximately 53 minutes.
