Pubs in the centre of Yateley

These pubs are all on or just off Reading Road, so you can easily walk to them from the town centre.

The White Lion

104 to 108 Reading Road, GU46 7RX

The White Lion pub on Reading Road, Yateley

The White Lion is a Grade II listed former coaching inn dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, and it’s still the handsome centrepiece of Yateley’s high street. Inside, the space is broken into smaller rooms and snug corners, with two log fires that make it one of the cosiest spots in town on a winter afternoon.

Food is served all day, and it’s dog and family friendly, with a few tables out front in summer. Real ale drinkers will find Fuller’s London Pride and Sharp’s Doom Bar on the bar. It’s part of the Vintage Inns group, so you can book a table online.

The White Lion is directly opposite Gayton House, so it doesn’t get any closer than this.

The Dog & Partridge

105 Reading Road, GU46 7LR

The Dog & Partridge pub on Yateley Green

If Yateley has a village pub, this is it. The Dog & Partridge looks out over Yateley Green, with the old St Peter’s Church next door, and on a sunny day the tables on the green are some of the best seats in town.

It’s best known for Sunday lunch, when booking is essential. There’s a beer garden with covered seating at the back, and it’s dog friendly. It’s also one of the livelier pubs in Yateley, with live music on Saturdays, a monthly quiz on a Tuesday and a monthly open mic night. Sport is shown on the big screen too, so pick your table accordingly if you want a quiet lunch.

The Royal Oak

27 Reading Road, GU46 7UG

The Royal Oak is a big, open-plan Greene King pub further along Reading Road, with plenty of parking at the back. It has comfy sofas, restaurant-style tables and a quiet area, as well as a darts board and pool table.

It’s the pub for regular nights out. There’s a quiz every Thursday, darts on Tuesdays, and pool on Mondays. Big sporting events are shown inside and on a large outdoor screen. It’s dog and family friendly, and food is served at lunchtime and in the evening.

A little further out

These pubs are better reached by car, bus or a longer walk, but they’re well worth the trip.

The Cricketers

Cricket Hill Lane, GU46 6BA

The Cricketers pub on Cricket Hill Lane, Yateley

The Cricketers is a large Greene King pub out of the centre, originally a Morland house. The bar is L-shaped, with comfortable areas leading off it and a small snug with a darts board.

It’s a favourite with families thanks to its big outdoor space, and it’s dog friendly too. Food is served all day, there’s live music on Friday evenings, and there’s parking along the driveway, including a disabled bay by the door.

The Ely

London Road, Blackwater, GU17 9LJ

The Ely is an ivy-covered red-brick country hotel and pub on the A30, right on the edge of Yateley Common. It opens early and serves food all day from breakfast, with a Sunday carvery and an open fire in winter.

The Ely is a natural stop after a walk on the common, and the Surrey Heath Ramblers have used its car park as the starting point for a Yateley Common walk. It’s dog friendly and has a beer garden for warmer days.

The Frog & Wicket, Eversley Cross

The Green, Eversley Cross, RG27 0NS

Just over the border in Eversley Cross, the Frog & Wicket faces the village cricket green. It’s a spacious, food-led Fuller’s pub with a wood-burning stove in the dining room, a garden with a children’s play area and a Tuesday quiz.

The Frog & Wicket also has a Grade II listed skittle alley that’s still in use and can be booked for parties.

The Chequers, Eversley Cross

Eversley Cross, RG27 0NS

The Chequers is a beamed, low-ceilinged gastropub with an open fire at the restaurant end and a large garden with covered outdoor dining. It serves breakfast every day, which makes it a good choice for a weekend morning out, and it’s dog friendly.

Life with a pub on the doorstep

There’s a lot to be said for being able to walk to the pub. No driving, no taxis, no checking bus times; just a short stroll for Sunday lunch or a drink by the fire.

That’s daily life at Gayton House, our collection of 22 apartments for the over 60s in the heart of Yateley. The White Lion is across the road, the Dog & Partridge is a few minutes’ walk away, and the shops, cafes and Yateley Green are all close by.
