Outdoor things to do in Yateley
Walk on Yateley Common
Yateley Common is around 500 acres of heath, woodland and ponds on the edge of town. It’s free to visit, and the 1.25-mile nature trail from Wyndham’s Pool is an easy place to start. Then in late summer, the heather turns the whole common purple. Our walker’s guide to Yateley Common also covers the routes, parking, wildlife and dog rules.
Explore Yateley Green
Yateley Green is the town’s large, wooded village green, crossed by Reading Road since 1801. Its largest pond, Shute’s Pond, attracts herons and ducks, and there’s a lily pond in the middle of the main grassy area. It’s a lovely spot for a short walk, and you’ll also pass the Dog & Partridge on the way.

Visit Fleet Pond nearby
If you’d like a change of scene, Fleet Pond is a short drive south. It’s a 119-acre nature reserve, protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Two bridges also make a circular walk around the water. Hart District Council and the Fleet Pond Society look after it together.
Historic things to do in Yateley
St Peter’s Church
St Peter’s Church overlooks Church End Green and has roots going back to Saxon times. According to Historic England’s listing, it has a Norman nave, a blocked Saxon window and a timber-framed west tower. However, a fire gutted the church in May 1979, so much of what you see today was rebuilt afterwards. Look out also for its unusual revolving lych-gate.

Old Yateley and the White Lion
The area around Yateley Green and St Peter’s has been a conservation area since 1977. Here you’ll find some of the town’s oldest buildings. For example, the White Lion is a Grade II listed former coaching inn from the late 18th or early 19th century.
The town’s name probably comes from the Anglo-Saxon words for a gate and a forest clearing. For more local history, the Yateley Society runs talks and events throughout the year.
